With a grant from the Sundance Foundation, CTI evaluated the use of the CTI Omega VI grinder for producing Moringa leaf powder
using leaves supplied by ECHO, the well known NGO in Florida. The studies indicated that by drying
and crushing the leaves and then passing them through the Omega VI, a fine Moringa leaf
powder could be easily produced.

- Grinder Training Workshop (PDF)
Under a collaborative venture with Environmental Research Mapping and Information Systems in Africa (ERMIS), CTI is conducting a year-long research project to expand CTI’s Ewing III grinder model into crops and products other than peanuts for which it was initially designed. CTI Volunteer

- CTI Supports Women's Enterprises in Malawi (PDF)
The Northwest Synod of Wisconsin, Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA) purchased several CTI Omega grinders and had them delivered to companion churches in Malawi where 30 women’s cooperatives process highly nutritious food for distribution to orphaned youth at area feeding centers. The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Malawi (ELCM) has placed a very high priority on organizing and developing successful women’s enterprise groups at the village level in order to: elevate the role of women in their societies, make women more effective in combating hunger, and recognizing women as a point of introduction of new ideas and techniques to the communities.

- CTI Grinders Produce Good Results in Mali (PDF)
CTI’s work in West Africa started several years ago in Mali, a land-locked country typical of the semi-arid tropical Sahelian zone immediately south of the Sahara and home to Timbuktu. Activity began with the introduction and field testing of CTI’s hand-powered peanut and grain grinders, thanks to collaboration with Iowa-based NGO Medicine for Mali (M4M).

- Grinders Benefit Sudan (PDF)
CTI volunteer Kathleen Graham visited Jalimo, Sudan in June, 2007 where she welcomed twenty Sudanese agricultural extension agents to the three day “Training of Trainers” technology workshop she had organized with the help of Norwegian People’s Aid manager Ezana Getahun. The goal was to transform these agents into CTI Ewing grinder experts, so they could return to their communities and teach villagers to use and maintain the Ewing grinder
Senegal

- CTI Partners With Peace Corps in Senegal (PDF)
In February 2003 CTI introduced grinding local millet flour and
peanut butter to a Peace Corps Volunteer (PCV) and a village Central Senegal. Core rural development issues in this area
are typical of those throughout the semi-arid zone reaching
across the continent. In the rural villages millet and sorghum are
usually processed with the traditional mortar and pestle to pound the grain into flour. Our technical objective was to introduce and assess the utility of
CTI grinder technology for processing grain and peanuts in the
area. Our management objective was to develop mutual compatibility with Peace Corps as the initial host
country liaison utilizing its dispersed network of Volunteers. PCV’s can promote CTI technologies
through their “Participatory Analysis for Community Action” programs and foster its
implementation during their second year of service when they are established in the community.

- Grinders in Iringa Province of Tanzania Bring Help and Joy (PDF)
Throughout the recent past, one of the main destinations of CTI’s Omega VI grinder has been the Iringa area of Tanzania (the Southern Highlands). The conduit for this distribution has been the St. Paul Area Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America.
Uganda

- CTI Takes Grinder Production to Uganda (PDF)
In 2000 CTI joined with AT Uganda Ltd., an NGO based in Kampala,
to improve village processing of peanut butter and grain milling in
Uganda supported by the McKnight Foundation. The goal was to
improve rural nutrition and promote income generation in 10
Northern and Eastern districts.
CTI’s role was to adapt its grinder technology to local needs and
establish local production capability to
sustain the industry in the area.

- Corn Storage in Guatemala Saves Crops and Bringhtens Lives (PDF)
Cooperating with the
Jalapa branch of CARE, International, CTI sought to reduce
the staggering loss of the corn crop from
harvest to human consumption. Our program concentrated on
eliminating the main reasons for the degradation of
the corn crop – mold, rodent infestation, animal
depredation, and insect attack; and sought to improve the
shelling, drying and storage of corn.

- Amerindian Women Create Local Business with CTI Grinders (PDF)
CTI’s Omega VI grinders are used by women’s cooperatives in 11 cottage industries in northern Guyana to make cassava bread and peanut butter snacks for local schoolchildren. A part of a USAID Peanut Development Project with the Peanut Collaborative Research Support Program (CRSP), the project has become a sustainable system that improves the lives of local peanut farmers (who receive a fair price for their crop), women’s cooperative employees (who earn $75 per month for their work), and schoolchildren (who receive a high-protein, high-calorie snack).

- CTI Technology Helps Treat
Malnourished Children in Haiti (PDF)
In partnership with Meds and Food for Kids, CTI has helped to feed thousands of malnourished toddlers in Haiti by supplying the devices and training needed to prepare the food medicine called Ready to Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF). Made primarily from peanuts, this threapeutic food does not require mixing with clean water like milk-based formulas and can be stored safely at room temperature. Several CTI grinders have been integral to Meds and Food for Kids' operation and CTI continues to provide simple solutions to support their life-giving program.

- Nutrition Project in Bangladesh Provides Income and Nourishment (PDF)
CTI collaborated with Lutheran Aid to Medicine in Bangladesh (LAMB) helped establish a small peanut butter production facility
using CTI grinders in the Parbatipur, Dinajpur District of Bangladesh.
The peanut butter produced is sold on a commercial basis at a small
profit as well being used as a primary source of protein in conjunction
with a local school lunch project. Plans are in place to introduce
small-scale potato processing using CTI technology at this site.

- Fact Sheet: Potato Processing in India (PDF)
- Potato Processing in India (PDF)
Peanuts and potatoes seem common enough, but for farmers in Gohaldanga, West Bengal, India,
they mean everything. Many farmers mortgage their land to support their potato crop, banking
everything on a good harvest and decent prices at market. In
order to optimize the life-sustaining potential of the potato,
CTI volunteers have introduced two
CTI technologies to this area: rustic storage and the potato
peeler and slicer.
